Man guilty of real estate agent's murder
A man has been found guilty of the rape and murder of a Melbourne real estate agent while showing him a house for sale.
The partially naked body of Lorelle Makin, 48, was found face down in a bathtub at a house for sale in Melton, in Melbourne's outer west, on September 15, last year.
After about half a day of deliberations a jury on Thursday found 36-year-old Shaoyi Liu, of Sydenham, guilty of rape and murder.
Liu, who pleaded not guilty to the charges, showed little emotion and looked down as the verdict was delivered to the court.
Members of Mrs Makin's family yelled out "Yes!", clapped and her brother called out "Guess where you're going pal, see you later."
Outside the court her daughter Samantha said the family was happy with the verdict.
"We're happy and we just want to get on with our lives," she said.
Mrs Makin's brother, Mick, also welcomed the verdict.
"He got what he deserved, the general public has spoken ... we're sick of these people coming out doing these sorts of things to women, it's not right," he said.
The seven day trial was told that Mrs Makin, a mother of two, was raped, choked to death and bashed repeatedly. Her mouth had been taped and a rubbish bag placed over her body.
During a police interview, Liu said he did not plan to attack Mrs Makin but he was suddenly overcome by a wave of anger, the court was told.
"I can recall that there was this sudden anger, burst out from me, I just exploded," he told police.
"I remember I put - put a choke on her."
Liu's lawyer Benjamin Lindner told the court there was no dispute that he conducted "serious criminal conduct" at the Melton home.
However, he said the jury would have to decide whether his client was guilty of murder and rape, or whether lesser crimes had occurred.
Mrs Makin's death sent shockwaves through the real estate industry and prompted it to introduce new safety guidelines.
The guidelines seek to minimise the safety risks for agents in a job where they often had to work alone.
